The spring 2020 issue of Silver & Blue magazine was published just as we began to understand that the novel coronavirus would bring major changes to the way we live. The last few months have further ushered in a different perspective of “normal” as we continue to navigate the ongoing global pandemic.
The fall 2020 issue of Silver & Blue—now available—captures a snapshot of the pivotal changes that have taken place around campus and in the classroom. And, in a feature titled “Dear 2020,” several University of New Orleans students lend their voices about the year 2020 and deciphering its lessons.
You also will get to read a very personal essay from Tim Duncan, ĢƵ’s vice president of athletics and recreation. In “Five Days Before George Floyd Was Killed,” Duncan writes about the implications and potentially deadly ramifications of unconscious bias and systemic racism.
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and alumnus Jericho Brown recalls his Creative Writing Workshop days at ĢƵ and shares how the program helped propel him into academia and earn one of writing’s most coveted award.
Other stories include: alumna Deleen Davis, who turned her forced evacuation from her Katrina-ravaged Slidell home into a career makeover in another state, how research by ĢƵ faculty members influence and drive change, what motivates Google VP Sabrina Farmer to support her alma mater in words and with deeds, and how New Orleans Athletics finished tops in the NCAA and the Southland Conference for community service.
